    For a long time, the seas and oceans have served mankind as an area of diverse activities (navigation, extraction of living and non-living resources of the sea, scientific research, etc.). In the process of these activities, States and international organizations enter into relations with each other, which are regulated by legal norms, interrelated and constituting in general the area of international legal regulation, called the international law of the sea.

    Because of the peculiarity of maritime activities, the vast majority of the rules of the international law of the sea are not found in other areas of international legal regulation. These are freedom of navigation on the high seas, right of peaceful passage of ships through territorial waters of foreign states, right of unimpeded transit passage of ships and aircraft through straits used for international navigation, etc. Some of the norms of international maritime law are considered as its principles because of their great importance for regulation of maritime activities.
