Whale Strandings

This map shows locations in New York where large whales have stranded since 1999

This map shows location of whales that died as a result of human interaction in the form of collisions with boats

As a result of these strandings, the Riverhead Foundation, as the New York State letter of agreement holder with National Marine Fisheries Service, is seeking funding to better assess the issue of human caused morality rates in marine mammals, particularly in large whales, due to collisions with ships.

To report in the sighting of a healthy marine mammal, please contact the Riverhead Foundation's Sighting Line at 631-369-9840 ext 15.  To report a sick, injured, or dead marine mammal, contact the Stranding Hotline at 631-369-9829.  Any contribution made, whether in the form of reporting in animals or monetary donations are greatly appreciated and can be the difference between life and death for these federally protected mammals.
