Harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) Rescued: September 7, 2008 Released: November 22, 2008
Fang's latest location:
Fang stranded on September 7, 2008 in East Hampton, New York. He was 44 lbs when he arrived at the Riverhead Foundation’s rehabilitation facility and had deep lacerations around his body most likely caused by a previous entanglement. A physical examination conducted by staff biologists and veterinarians revealed that Fang was missing several teeth and had ulcerated gums. He was also diagnosed with pneumonia through radiographs, or x-rays.
Fang was hydrated and placed on antibiotics to fight his respiratory infection. He also developed seal pox lesions, which subsided after six weeks. Fang’s rehabilitation lasted over two months. He gained 32 pounds during his stay at the hospital eagerly consuming over 10 lbs of fish every day!
Fang was released back to the wild from Hampton Bays, NY, on November 22nd, 2008. He was outfitted with a satellite transmitter to monitor his post release movements.
