To a roaring applause, Andrew Sabin, the recipient of the Environmental Stewardship Award at the 8th Annual Oceans of Hope Benefit held by the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation at Atlantis Marine World, challenged the guests at the event along with the public to raise $25,000 for the New York State Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program before the next Oceans of Hope.  If this challenge is achieved, the gift will be matched with a $25,000 donation from the Andrew Sabin Family Foundation.

Mr. Sabin, CEO of the Sabin Metal Corporation, has a strong passion to preserve the environment-air, water, flora and fauna, and his actions reflect his passion. Andrew has become an avid supporter and close friend of the Riverhead Foundation. He proudly “adopted” a Kemp’s ridley sea turtle and a Gray seal, which were both successfully rehabilitated and released in 2007. His interest and enthusiasm during a sea turtle release was so inspirational and contagious that he enabled the Foundation to enhance their sea turtle research efforts dramatically. Andrew was a founding member and president of the South Fork Natural History Museum (SOFO), the only museum of its kind on the East End. His pursuit to preserve the environment, fostered a community partnership between the Foundation and the South Fork History Museum. Andrew Sabin has been an integral part of the community here on the East End as well as world wide as a dedicated and enthusiastic participant in preserving both the terrestrial and marine environment.

“Andrew’s work is admirable and vital to educating the public thus creating better stewards for our environment. We were so pleased to have honored him at Oceans of Hope,” stated Robert DiGiovanni, Jr, Foundation Director/Senior Biologist of the Riverhead Foundation. The Riverhead Foundation hopes that the public is up to Mr. Sabin’s challenge to raise $25,000 to help support the New York State Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program.

The 8th Annual Oceans of Hope fundraiser celebrates and supports the preservation and protection of our ocean backyard. Funds raised from the event help the Riverhead Foundation continue its efforts to rescue marine mammals and sea turtles and educate the public about how they can help save our oceans. Each year the Riverhead Foundation responds to more than 200 marine mammals and sea turtles. The Riverhead Foundation is also dedicated to educating and training the public to be our eyes and ears because we can’t do this alone. The Riverhead Foundation currently has eight sea turtles and twelve seals in our hospital! You can save a marine mammal or sea turtle by calling (631) 369-9840 and donating today.
