The release involved two juvenile ridley sea turtles rescued by the Foundation on November 22, 2000. Both animals were recovered suffering from hypothermia also known as cold stunning. Each of the turtles received nine months of extensive rehabilitation at the Foundation for Marine Research and Foundation's critical care facility located at the Atlantis Marine World in Riverhead, New York.
The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation is New York's only authorized marine mammal and sea turtle rescue program. During the months of November 2000 through December 31, 2000 the Foundation rescued a total of 12 sea turtles. Cold-stunning is a condition where cool water below 50 degrees can bring about decreasing low body temperatures rendering the sea turtle helpless and at risk of death if not rescued and treated.
