The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation completed another busy day with a double release, one on the sea and one on the beach. We enjoy sharing our experiences with all those who support us. So to keep you updated, we’ve included a brief overview of what the Riverhead Foundation has accomplished so far this year; all of which is a direct reflection of the generosity and support of caring individuals who support this important work.
This year has already been very eventful beginning with the Riverhead Foundation organizing and directing attempts to herd 20 common dolphins that found themselves caught in Northwest Creek in East Hampton. We also transported “Ariel”, an orphaned bottlenose dolphin calf, to Florida’s Gulfarium in Fort Walton Beach on February 21st.
The Riverhead Foundation has also seen a steady flow of patients coming into its care. We are still caring for “Freebird”, an Atlantic green sea turtle who is awaiting release later this summer. In summation, we currently have four sea turtles and three seals being cared for at the Riverhead Foundation hospital facility.
These releases are made possible through the generous donations of many supporters including Mr. Charles Bowman of Landuse Ecological Services and Mr. Paul Grosser of P.W. Grosser Consulting for providing a support vessels. Escorts for the release vessels were the Suffolk County Sheriff Marine Patrol and the United States Coast Guard.
The Riverhead Foundation could not do this important work without its many community partnerships. Thanks to this network of many, “Orville” and many other marine mammals have gotten a second chance at life. Thanks to many of our supporters both large and small, we are able to continue this important work. Special thanks to Senator Carl Marcellino, Assemblyman Robert Sweeney and Assemblyman Marc Alessi for allocating much needed funds to support the continuing efforts of the Riverhead Foundation. Also, a special thank you to the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Program for working beside us to save the many marine mammals that need our help.
And a big thank you to the board of directors, staff, interns, and volunteers work enthusiastically and tirelessly each day to carry out our mission of preserving and protecting our marine environment.
