On Friday, December 17, 2004, biologists will release to the wild a harbor seal and a harp seal rescued by the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation. The release site will be the boat ramp off of Ponguoque Bridge in Hampton Bays at 11:00 AM.
Georgia – a female harbor seal was rescued on 9/15/04 in Wainscot by Georgica Pond (hence the name). At the time of her rescue Georgia was a young, skinny pup weighing barely 22 lbs. Her shivering body was marked by a large wound. Georgia was transported to the Riverhead Foundation’s hospital facility for rehabilitation. Under the care of Drs. Robert Pisciotta of North Fork Animal Hospital, and Richard Hanusch of Aquebogue Animal Hospital, Georgia’s condition improved quickly and her weight has reached healthy 60 lbs.
Ichabod – a male harp seal was reported to the Riverhead Foundation’s 24-hour rescue hotline (631-369-9829) on May 6, 2004. Ichabod, unresponsive and motionless, was found on the beach in Amagansett. Upon arrival at the Riverhead Foundation’s rescue facility Ichabod was treated for a life threatening dehydration. He turned out to be a fighter. Ichabod gained 70 lbs while in rehabilitation and was recently deemed fit for release.
Georgia and Ichabod will be available for adoption on the day of their release. The Riverhead Foundation’s adoption program helps defray costs of food and medication for the animals currently undergoing rehabilitation.
